Question 1

What is trekking?

Accepted Answer

Trekking is a long and adventurous journey undertaken on foot in areas where common means of transport are generally not available. It often involves hiking through remote areas, mountains, and natural terrains.

Question 2

How is trekking different from hiking?

Accepted Answer

While both involve walking in nature, hiking typically refers to shorter, easier walks on well-marked trails, often for a day or less. Trekking usually implies a more extended journey, often lasting several days and requiring more preparation and endurance.

Question 3

Do I need special training to go trekking?

Accepted Answer

Basic physical fitness is necessary for trekking, especially for longer or more challenging trails. Training through regular walking, hiking, and strength exercises can help prepare your body for trekking.

Question 4

Where can I actually see a Royal Bengal Tiger in 2026?

Accepted Answer

While Chitwan is the famous choice, our team is currently seeing much better results in Bardia National Park. It’s more remote and feels like the "Old Nepal." Because there are fewer tourists, the tigers are less shy. We often tell our guests: if you want a "quiet encounter" where it’s just you and the King of the Jungle in the tall grass, head West to Bardia.

Question 5

Will I see a One-Horned Rhino on my safari?

Accepted Answer

Almost certainly! We’ve seen Nepal’s rhino population thrive over our 35 years in business. If you visit Chitwan National Park between January and March, your chances are nearly 100%. This is when the locals cut the tall "elephant grass," and the rhinos come out to the riverbanks. It’s a sight you’ll never forget.

Question 6

I’m dreaming of seeing a Red Panda, where should I trek?

Accepted Answer

Red Pandas are the "fire foxes" of the forest, and they are masters of hiding. We recommend the Langtang Valley or the far-eastern Kanchenjunga region. If you are a serious photographer, ask us about Dobate in Ilam. We’ve helped several professional crews find them there in the bamboo thickets.

Question 7

What is the hardest animal to spot in the Himalayas?

Accepted Answer

That would be the Snow Leopard, the "Ghost of the Mountains." Even for us, they are a rare gift. They live above 3,500m in the rugged terrain of Upper Mustang and Dolpo. Seeing one takes more than a guide it takes a specialized tracker and a lot of patience. But when you do catch that flash of grey in the rocks? It’s life-changing.

Question 8

Are walking safaris safe? I’m nervous about being on foot.

Accepted Answer

It’s natural to feel a bit of a thrill! At Trekking Team Pvt Ltd, our naturalists have spent decades studying animal behavior. A walking safari isn't a "hike"; it’s a silent, sensory experience. We teach you how to read pugmarks and listen to bird "alarm calls." It’s much more intimate than a noisy jeep, and with our experts, you're in very safe hands.

Question 9

Is Koshi Tappu really worth it for birdwatchers?

Accepted Answer

If you’re a "birder," it’s heaven. With over 485 species, you’ll be reaching for your binoculars every five minutes. Look for the rare Bengal Florican or the migratory birds that fly all the way from Siberia. Plus, it’s the only place we can show you the Arna (wild water buffalo).

Question 10

When should I book my trip for the best wildlife photos?

Accepted Answer

Aim for February, March, or April. The air is crisp, the watering holes are busy, and the rhododendrons are exploding with color. The "Himalayan Monal" (our national bird, the Danfe) looks spectacular against the spring blooms. The light during these months is soft and perfect for your lens.

Question 11

Can I really find dolphins and crocodiles in a landlocked country?

Accepted Answer

It surprises many of our guests! In the Rapti river, you’ll see the Gharial, a strange, beautiful crocodile with a needle-thin snout. And if we take you deep into the Karnali River in Bardia, you might see the Gangetic River Dolphin surfacing. It’s a reminder of how diverse Nepal’s water systems really are.

Question 12

What should I pack for the jungle?

Accepted Answer

Think like a tiger "blend in!" Wear khaki, olive, or dull browns. Bright reds or whites can actually startle the animals. We also suggest long sleeves and trousers. Not only does it help you blend in, but it protects you from the sun and the occasional "hitchhiking" leech during the greener months.

Question 13

Should I be worried about dangerous animals while I’m trekking?

Accepted Answer

Most animals are more afraid of you than you are of them! In the lowlands, we give wild elephants and bears a very wide berth. In the mountains, your biggest "danger" is actually a Yak! They aren't aggressive, but they are heavy. Pro Tip: Always stay on the "inside" (the mountain side) of the trail when they pass so you don't get accidentally nudged toward the edge.

Question 14

How do I choose a trekking route?

Accepted Answer

Consider your fitness level, experience, and interests. Research the difficulty level, duration, and terrain of potential routes. It's also essential to consider weather conditions and the best time of year to trek in the chosen area.

Question 15

Is it safe to trek alone?

Accepted Answer

While solo trekking can be a fulfilling experience, it carries more risks. It's generally safer to trek with a group or guide, especially if you are new to trekking or unfamiliar with the area. Always inform someone about your trekking plans and expected return time.

Question 16

Are there "Luxury" trekking options?

Accepted Answer

Question 17

Do I need trekking poles?

Accepted Answer

Trekking poles are recommended for added balance and reducing strain on your knees, especially on steep or uneven terrain.

Question 21

What fitness level is required for trekking?

Accepted Answer

Trekking fitness depends on the difficulty of the trail. Moderate fitness is usually enough for easier hikes, but for longer, more challenging treks, you should build endurance, strength, and cardio fitness through regular exercise.

Question 22

How can I prepare physically for a trek?

Accepted Answer

To prepare, focus on cardio exercises like hiking, running, or cycling, as well as strength training for your legs and core. Start training a few months in advance, gradually increasing the intensity.

Question 23

How do I prevent injuries while trekking?

Accepted Answer

To prevent injuries, make sure to stretch before and after trekking, wear well-fitting footwear, use trekking poles for stability, and maintain a steady pace. Stay hydrated and take breaks when necessary.

Question 24

What should I include in my first-aid kit?

Accepted Answer

Your first-aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister treatment, pain relievers, any personal medications, and a compression bandage for sprains.

Question 25

How do I recover after a long trek?

Accepted Answer

Rest and rehydrate after your trek. Stretch or do light yoga to ease muscle soreness, and eat protein-rich foods to aid muscle recovery. Get a good night’s sleep to help your body heal.

Question 26

What is the "Digital QR Entry" system (FNMIS)?

Accepted Answer

New for 2026, the Nepal Department of Immigration has introduced the Foreign Nationals Management Information System (FNMIS). Upon entry, you are issued a digital QR code. This code is used for check-ins at hotels and remote security checkpoints. It’s a safety measure that allows us to track your location in real-time in case of mountain emergencies.

Question 30

Once you have your submission receipt (which is valid for 15 days), you must visit either the Department of Immigration in Kalikasthan, Kathmandu, or the Immigration Office in Damside, Pokhara. Even with the online form, you must appear in person to get the physical stamp.

Question 32

What is the maximum number of days I can stay in Nepal?

Accepted Answer

Under current 2026 regulations, a tourist can stay in Nepal for a maximum of 150 days per calendar year (January to December). If you arrive in late December and stay into January, your 150-day limit resets with the new year. We’ve helped many "slow travelers" plan their year to maximize their time in the mountains this way.

Question 33

What happens if my visa has already expired?

Don't panic, but act quickly. If you stay past your visa expiration, you will be charged a late fine of USD 5 per day. Question 41

What are the early symptoms of altitude sickness (AMS)?

Accepted Answer

The earliest signs of Acute Mountain Sickness often feel like a bad hangover. Watch for a persistent headache, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. If you experience these above 2,500m, it is your body’s signal to stop ascending and rest.

Question 42

Can I prevent altitude sickness with Diamox?

Accepted Answer

While Diamox (Acetazolamide) helps the body acclimatize faster, it is not a "magic pill" that prevents AMS entirely. It works by acidifying the blood to stimulate deeper breathing. We recommend consulting your doctor before starting a 125mg or 250mg dose 24 hours before your ascent.

Question 43

Does physical fitness prevent altitude sickness?

Accepted Answer

Surprisingly, no. Being an elite athlete does not protect you from AMS. In fact, fit trekkers often push themselves too hard, which can increase the risk. Altitude sickness depends on how your body adapts to lower oxygen levels, not your lung capacity or muscle strength.

Question 44

What is the "Climb High, Sleep Low" rule?

Accepted Answer

This is the golden rule of Himalayan trekking. It means you should hike to a higher elevation during the day (to challenge your body) but return to a lower altitude to sleep. This "staged" exposure helps your red blood cells adapt without the stress of staying high overnight.

Question 45

How much water should I drink to avoid AMS?

Accepted Answer

Hydration is critical. You should aim for 3 to 4 liters of water daily. Dehydration mimics AMS symptoms and thickens your blood, making it harder for oxygen to reach your organs. Pro-tip: Ensure your urine remains pale/clear throughout the trek.

Question 46

What should I do if my AMS symptoms get worse?

Accepted Answer

The "Million Dollar Rule" of the mountains is: Go down. If a headache doesn't go away with rest or if you begin vomiting, you must descend at least 300m to 500m immediately. Never wait for the morning if symptoms are severe; descending is the only definitive cure.

Question 47

Is garlic soup actually good for altitude sickness?

Accepted Answer

Yes! While it’s a local "Sherpa remedy," garlic is known to thin the blood and improve circulation, which can aid oxygen transport. While it won't replace proper acclimatization, a bowl of fresh garlic soup is a staple recommendation in Himalayan teahouses.

Question 48

What are the signs of HAPE and HACE?

Accepted Answer

These are life-threatening forms of altitude sickness. HAPE (fluid in lungs) causes extreme shortness of breath, even at rest, and a wet cough. HACE (swelling of the brain) causes confusion, hallucinations, and a "drunk-like" stumble. Both require immediate emergency evacuation.

Question 49

Why should I avoid alcohol and smoking while trekking?

Accepted Answer

Alcohol and tobacco are respiratory depressants. They slow your breathing rate and dehydrate your body, significantly increasing your risk of AMS. We strictly advise saving the celebration drinks for when you have safely returned to Kathmandu.

Question 50

Are your trekking guides trained in altitude safety?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all Trekking Team Pvt Ltd guides are certified in Wilderness First Aid and carry pulse oximeters. They monitor your oxygen saturation levels and heart rate every morning and evening to catch early signs of AMS before they become dangerous.

Question 51

Why should I book with a local Nepali agency like Trekking Team Pvt Ltd?

Accepted Answer

Booking locally ensures that your money stays in the local economy and that you are guided by experts with "boots on the ground" knowledge. With 35 years of experience since 1991, we provide deeper cultural insights, better safety protocols, and more flexible itineraries than international middleman agencies.

Question 52

Can I customize my trekking itinerary?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. We specialize in tailor-made journeys. Whether you want to add a helicopter return to your Everest Base Camp trek or combine the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake, we can adjust the pace, duration, and luxury level to match your preferences.

Question 53

What is the difference between a "Teahouse Trek" and a "Camping Trek"?

Accepted Answer

A teahouse trek involves staying in local mountain lodges with basic amenities and hot meals. A camping trek is a fully supported expedition where our team carries all equipment and prepares meals in remote areas. Most of our popular routes, like Mardi Himal and Manaslu, are now high-quality teahouse treks.

Question 54

Do I need a guide for trekking in Nepal in 2026?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as of 2026, the Nepal government requires foreign trekkers to be accompanied by a licensed guide in all national parks and restricted areas. This is for your safety and to ensure the preservation of the mountain environment. All our guides are government-certified and highly experienced.

Question 55

What kind of food is available during the trek?

Accepted Answer

You will enjoy a mix of traditional Nepali "Dal Bhat" (lentil soup, rice, and curry), which is the best fuel for hiking, as well as international dishes like pasta, pancakes, and eggs. We also cater to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets just let us know in advance!

Question 56

How do I get my trekking permits?

Accepted Answer

When you book with us, we handle all the paperwork. We will need a copy of your passport and photos to secure your TIMS card, National Park permits, and restricted area permits (like those for Manaslu or Upper Mustang) before you arrive in Kathmandu.

Question 57

What happens in case of an emergency or injury?

Accepted Answer

Safety is our first priority. Our guides are trained to handle altitude sickness and basic first aid. In the event of a serious injury or severe AMS, we coordinate immediate helicopter evacuation to the best hospitals in Kathmandu through your travel insurance provider.

Question 58

Is there an age limit for trekking in the Himalayas?

Accepted Answer

There is no strict age limit, but trekkers should be in good health. We have successfully led children as young as 7 and seniors over 75. For younger or older trekkers, we recommend "slow-paced" itineraries like Khopra Danda or Ghorepani Poon Hill.

Question 59

How much should I tip the guides and porters?

Accepted Answer

Tipping is a local custom and a way to show appreciation for the hard work of your mountain crew. While it is at your discretion, a general guideline is to budget about 10–15% of your total trek cost to be shared among the guides and porters.

Question 60

How do I book a trip with Trekking Team Pvt Ltd?

Accepted Answer

You can book directly through our website, our Social sites or by contacting us via email. A small deposit is required to secure your dates and permits, and the remaining balance can be settled upon your arrival in Kathmandu.

Question 61

Do I still need a TIMS card in 2026?

Accepted Answer

This depends on where you are hiking. For most classic routes like Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu, the e-TIMS card is mandatory and must be issued through a registered agency like ours. However, if you are heading to the Everest (Khumbu) region, the TIMS card is no longer required ,it has been replaced by a local Rural Municipality permit that you pay for in Lukla or Monjo.

Question 62

Can I trek solo without a guide in Nepal?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the region, and a lot of what is written about this online is wrong. Annapurna, Langtang, Everest and the other open regions: yes, you can. There is no legal requirement to hire a guide on these routes, and no checkpoint will turn you back for walking without one. We still put a licensed guide on every departure we run, because that is our standard rather than the law's. Restricted areas such as Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu, Tsum Valley and Kanchenjunga: no. A licensed guide is mandatory. Since March 2026 you can hold the permit in your own name without a second trekker, but you still walk with a guide. Everest and the Khumbu: this is the exception. Khumbu runs on a local rural municipality permit rather than the TIMS system that carries the guide requirement, so independent trekking there remains legally possible. We do not sell unguided trips regardless, and after the search and rescue cases of recent seasons we think that is the right call at that altitude. Tibet and Bhutan: independent travel is not permitted at all. Both require a guided booking through a licensed operator.

Question 63

What is the big update for the Upper Mustang permit?

Accepted Answer

This is great news for 2026! The government has finally scrapped the old, rigid USD 500 flat fee for 10 days. Now, the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is a flexible USD 50 per day. This is a "Daily Rate Revolution" - if you only want to visit Lo Manthang for 5 days, you only pay USD 250. It makes short Jeep or horse-riding tours much more affordable.

Question 64

What are the fees for the Manaslu Circuit in 2026?

Accepted Answer

Manaslu remains a restricted area. During the peak autumn months (September–November), the permit is USD 100 for the first 7 days, then USD 15 per day after. In the off-season (December–August), it drops to USD 75 for the first 7 days. Remember, you also need the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and the Annapurna (ACAP) permit to finish the trek.
